What + How + Where = 21st Century Learning
It is true technology is constantly changing and growing. We must adapt our teaching to meet the needs of our students. It is true content alone is not enough for students to be competitive in the 21st century. In many of the videos I have seen a reoccurring theme, we are preparing our students for jobs that don’t exist yet, technology that isn’t invented, and problems that we don't understand or that hasn't occurred at this time. As these things change in society our way we teach and relay information to our students must change and evolve to keep up with the current trends in education.
I feel that it is important to make our lessons relevant to the lives of the children we teach. The more we capture their attention with things that are important to them, the more involved they will be in the learning process. The way that our parents and grandparents were taught may not be the most relevant way for children to learn today. As society is changing so are our children. We have to meet them where they are and do our best to raise their achievement to a higher level. The end of the clip mentions everyone one must be a learner and a teacher! Let’s give the children a chance to be completive 21st century learners.
Andrea,
ReplyDeleteGreat post this week. I agree that today's technology is changing and that we as teacher need to make sure we change with it and teach our students th newest things coming out. I teach high school and I'm sure just like your 4th graders they are amazed by all the new technology that is out there. Anytime they get to learn about new technology and get to actually use it in the classroom I have my best results when it comes to them remembering.
Hope you have a great weekend and see you Tuesday.
To quote Pearl Jam, "It's an evolution Baby!" It is a race to finish line not yet seen, or may never be seen, a race to the top of a TOWER!...I agree, we need to keep walking through this forest of gadgets and see where each tree leads us...to another learner, I surmize. Our students dna has been rewritten by apple and microsoft and others, so where does it end? who knows, it's exciting!
ReplyDeleteThanks guys! Yes technology totally motivates my students hoping to get more soon! I think it is also important not to forget about the hands on activities as well. I don't want the children to loose the human connection! They still need to know how to communicate and work with people not just machines :) Have a great weekend see you all on Tues night!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the video that you posted. With every video I watched I felt like there was something new I wanted to implement in my classroom. I agree that content knowledge alone is not enough for the 21st century learners, as well as the idea and fact that powerful learning begins with relationships, relevance and rigor. We must have new challenges for students. Powerful learning occurs in all environments. In order to get there we have to rethink and create new traditions. Educators and policy makers must apply the 21st century skills we project onto our students on to themselves. Schools need to reinvent themselves as learning organizations. We must all be willing to be a learner as well as teachers. I really liked this video. I’m thinking about sending it to my principal to see if she will play it during our Wednesday staff meeting. Thanks for sharing!
