Links useful for student achievement project/teacher/administrator

Teacher/administrator

In this article it mentioned that not much preparation on assessment training is given to teachers and administrators. The advice that is important to remember as an administrator is to use your professional judgment. It is also important to know the difference between assessment terms such as measurement evidence and evaluation. There are several types of assessments available; you have to make sure you are choosing the assessments that fit your assignments. That means looking at all the different factors that you are trying to assess. Also assessments should provide feedback and opportunities for revision to improve rather than simply test learning. As an administrator it is important that you are making sure teachers are being mindful of the affects assessments have on students’ motivation and learning. Assessments can and should be used during your instruction to help meet the needs of the students.

She had ideas to help improve class assessments that provide teachers with useful information. One suggestion was to pilot test questions yourself then use your rubric to score the item. She points out observing during the test instead of completing other work that you may want to get completed while the students are testing. By doing this it gives you information about students like how who finishes first and timing of the test. I think that this is a good idea but with the amount of work teachers have I know that I often feel like I have to capitalize on ever little second so I can keep up with everything. I like the idea of the students rate the test and staring questions they had difficulty with. I also feel it is important to go over the test with students so they have the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and make sure they understand the concept being taught.

Student Achievement Project:

The two key questions to ask when doing my research project regarding validity and reliability. Validity: Does this test measure what its supposed to measure? Reliability: Does this test consistently measure what it supposed to measure? A test may be reliable but not necessarily valid. If a test is valid it will also be reliable. This video helps me to understand the difference between the two concepts. When I work on my project I will be able to ask myself these questions to make sure the assessment measures what it is supposed to measure. The important thing is to keep the focus of the study in mind while creating the assessment.

The term measurement described in this article is important to the student achievement project. Measurement is according to the selection attributes or dimensions of some physical object are determined. Measurement is different from assessment and it is important to know the difference when creating tools to analyze results for the project. When use measure you are usually using a standard tool to get the correct dimensions. When you measure you collecting information based on an established rule.

Assessments will be very important to my student achievement project. Assessments are used to determine information that is relevant to a goal or objective. A test is a considered a type of assessment and there are many different types of assessments that could be used in action research projects. When you give an assessment we use that information to determine whether or not an objective or goal has been obtained. In my case I want to know how we can improve independent reading time and I will be looking at different assessment data to see if the goal to improve student achievement was met.

Literature reviews

The two videos provided a lot of information that are helpful in defining the components of a literature review. Literature reviews are a good way to display what you have learned through your research. I like how Dr. Classen described literature reviews as a “chain story”. When doing a literature review you are able to analyze information that you have researched from several sources and then make your connections.

I have decided that I wanted to focus my action research on the effectiveness of smartboards (interactive white boards) and how they impact student learning. Smartboards have become very popular and many schools are working to get them in every classroom. I am in the early stage of researching but I have found there are several articles on smartboards. I have to narrow down the articles I have found that are relevant to the effectiveness of teachers using smartboards.

Literature reviews have several steps and it is important to analyze the articles to help focus my research. I will essentially I will take the annotated bibliographies I will write and use them to create my literature review. The literature review will contain research on the topic along with my views and research that I will complete on the topic. I agree with the end of the video, Literature reviews can be intimidating at first. I hope that I will be able to take the components taught in these videos to help break down the process of writing a review.

Research Methods

I feel that all three-research models can be used in researching information within the schools. I used the following three videos to help me decide on the thing I would research.

I have worked in schools where we have taken the assessment data and broke it apart and analyzed what we need to work on next. I think that this is an example of quantitative research and I would continue to use this approach. It is helpful in seeing the areas of need within the curriculum. I would use the data to separate the students into groups to help address their specific areas of need.

I feel that it may be helpful to combine the qualitative and action research model to research the effectiveness of professional development opportunities with the school. I would research the skills that teachers need to further develop. I would then take the data found and find a group of teachers that would be willing to participate in the study. The teachers would go through professional development training sessions and then implement the strategies in their classes. It would be interesting to see what the teachers got from the training and how they applied it in their classes. The most important reason for training teachers, I would think is to impact student achievement. I think it would move in to another research topic but I would then like to see the benefits of professional development classes had on student achievement. Research is an important part to education and we must use what we find to help the students be successful.
